Description

In honor of Independence Day I decided to put together a Red, White and Blue fluorescent mineral set. This turned out to be a lot harder than I thought! I have a lot of Red fluorescing minerals, White fluorescing minerals, and Blue fluorescing minerals, but finding the right shades, without other inappropriate colors, was quite challenging. For example the Red in our flag is NOT an Orange-Red, and there is no Green in our flag, so that rules out most of my Franklin pieces. Oh yeah, and all the specimens have to be from the United States of America! After looking at all my stock I decided the best way of doing this was Long Wave.
The highlight of this set is the new and unique find of Red fluorescing Grossular Garnet from the Stifle claims in Georgetown, California. The find was a single lens abut about 3 meters long, and 1 meter thick which has been completely mined out. About 1,200 Grossular specimens were recovered, of these only about 10 to 15% were good fluorescent specimens. Colorless or white grossular is among the rarer colors for any garnet species, and fluorescence in these is rarer still. The only other know fluorescent white Grossular is from the Jeffrey quarry in Quebec which fluoresces orange or peach under long-wave ultraviolet and pink under shortwave ultraviolet light (Robbins, 1983). The fact that the Jeffery material fluoresces a different color under long-wave and has a shortwave response indicates it is probably a different activator at work. There is ongoing research to determine the activator that is causing the unique fluorescence of the Georgetown Grossular. The LW fluorescence of this material is best observed with a high intensity LW LED source like a Convoy. The pictures were taken with a Way To Cool 9W LW UV source, but he picture brightness was adjusted to what you would see when using a Convoy. I have more of these specimens if you want to buy just the Grossular.
The Blue Fluorescing Fluorite is another California Classic. This comes from the Afton Canyon area of the Cady Mountains. This fluorite is unusual due to its daylight Green color, Octahedral shape, and fluorescent zoning. California is not known for producing Fluorite, and there are only two localities in the state that produce Octahedral Green Fluorites – this locality and the Felix prospect in Azusa; both of these localities are now closed to collecting. This material was collected in the late 1990s before the area became a National Monument.
The White fluorescing Fluorite is from Ohio. The exact location was not specified. This isn’t a particularly rare or unusual mineral but the size and color was exactly what I needed to complete this set. Total weight for all three specimens is 25 oz

Domestic Shipping
For domestic shipping I generally use Fed Exp Ground for heavier and more expensive items, and US Postal Service Priority Mail for lighter and less expensive items. Both services have door to door tracking and full insurance. If you have a shipping preference please let me know. If the shipping service I use costs less than eBay charges, I will refund any excess. I only charge actual shipping costs with no extra charges for packing or shipping materials and will gladly combine shipments. If the combined shipping doesn’t work for some reason, I will refund any excess shipping.
International Shipping
I use US Postal Service Priority mail for all international shipments. Please note that due to a lack of international flights, many overseas shipments are going by boat instead of air. This can add a month or more to delivery times. Purchase at your own risk.
